Quality Engineer (Hayward, CA)

Job Description:

The Quality Engineer is a direct position reporting to the site Director of Operations. The Quality Engineer’s (QE) main responsibilities include performance of tasks required to ensure effective implementation and continual improvement of the Quality Management System (QMS). Duties include implementation, monitoring of metrics and controls, Internal Auditing, Corrective and Preventative Action administration, Training and Certification Iniatives and coordination of site Quality Improvement Teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers elements of the Quality Assurance System in accordance with the Quality Manual and associated documents as directed by the Quality Manager.
  • Maintains site document and data control and ensures proper storage of Quality records on site.
  • Performs, arranges, or assists in the coordination of Internal Audits, Calibration of Equipment, Preventative Maintenance, Process Control Iniatives, etc. as required by documented procedures and schedules.
  • Ensures control and proper disposition of nonconforming material and supplies
  • Documents and monitors closure of corrective action requests, customer complaints, and warranty claims.
  • Performs periodic training of site personnel in quality system theory and practice as required.
  • Determines quality improvement parameters by assisting in identifying statistical methods relevant to the processes
  • Administration of daily/weekly/monthly quality reporting.
  • Maintains corrective action, warranty claims, risk management, calibration, defect, etc. data sets necessary for effective evaluation and improvement of site processes and products.
  • Assures timely communication of quality issues and nonconformance trends through statistical and narrative quality reports
  • Prepares calibration recall reports and verifies calibration is performed per requirements
  • Prepares weekly and monthly reports and special reports as required from the site Director of Operations, Quality Manager, and/or members of the Executive Committee.
  • Maintains site quality reporting and communications programs to aid in quality awareness.
  • Responds to customer requests for self-survey, corrective actions, or site audits.
  • Completes and returns customer survey requests with the support of the Quality Manager
  • Champions customer corrective action requests to ensure they are compiled effectively in a timely manner.
  • Follows up on approved corrective actions to verify effective implementation of actions agreed upon.
  • Coordinates customer site audits with Quality Manager and site Director of Operations, and participates as required.
  • Maintains files of customer correspondences, survey/scorecard results, approvals, specifications, etc.
  • Monitors and reports nonconformance data in an effort to drive continual improvement.
  • Reviews reject / DMR data and prepares trend charts and histograms for use in discussing defect reduction approaches
  • Assists in the initiation of corrective action teams with the purpose of reducing defect occurrences or reversing negative trends in defects observed.
  • Monitors Supplier Materials / Calibration Program.
  • Ensures use of approved suppliers for materials affective product and service quality. Works with Purchasing and Engineering, as needed, to approve and rate new potential vendors per quality system requirements.
  • Ensures that materials used comply with list of process specific materials (those requiring unique sources that, if alternates were used, may compromise product quality).
  • Maintains relationship with local calibration vendors as required to ensure calibration of process critical equipment.
  • Monitors Production and Administrative functions
  • Monitors housekeeping performed by production personnel and use of housekeeping logs
  • Monitors periodic surface roughness, particle count, fiber inspection, chemical analysis, documentation sign-off, etc. as defined in various procedures to ensure compliance
  • Monitors filing of Training, Production, Process Control, etc. records by other departments to ensure compliance with quality system requirements.
  • Provides Training, and required re-training status reports to management
  • Gathers feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of current training programs and assists as directed for new program development
  • Coordinates and participates, as directed, in active improvements to the training program in relation to identified internal and external customer needs.
  • Maintains accurate records for training activities for each site employee. These records are essential for maintaining internal quality objectives, ensuring to meet Safety and Environmental responsibilities, and to meet customer expectations for training and certification of personnel.
  • Knowledgeable of all production processes
  • Learns all production processes sufficient to allow effective auditing of those functions.
  • Maintains technical knowledge of documentation, data collection, tools, equipment, and customer requirements to allow sufficient support of the quality system.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor of Science degree in related Engineering field or two to six years relevant experience comprised of documented training, experience with a Quality Management System in compliance with an accredited ISO 9001 standard.
  • ASQ Certification, Six Sigma and/ or Lean Manufacturing certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of and practical application of Quality Engineering principles and Quality tools and methods, including, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility Study (GR&R), and basic Problem Solving Methodologies.
  • Knowledge and application of Metrology Techniques including, mechanical measurements systems, measurement techniques and process capability studies.
  • Ability to design appropriate inspection methods to ensure product manufacturability is feasible.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skilled in SPC (Statistical Process Control) and Process Capability using .JMP or similar
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Must possess the abilities to multitask and work well under pressure.
  • Must possess strong reading, communication, and comprehension abilities. Must be able to read, comprehend, and generate internal documents such as work order travelers, SOPs, inventory records, state and local regulations, and maintain internal logs and general company records in a clear concise manner. Brainstorming and bringing new ideas to the table are an essential part of the job.
  • Skilled in analytical and advanced mathematics.

Work Environment:

  • Safety: Employee will be trained in, and is to follow and lead by example, all general safety requirements of Pentagon Technologies as well as specific safety regulatory requirements.
  • Must be able to function well in an office environment.
  • Must also be able to work in a controlled chemical and wastewater environment.
  • Must also be able to perform in a laboratory environment.
  • Persons who are sensitive to chemical environments with such medical conditions as asthma, allergies, or extreme sensitivity to chemicals may not be considered as good candidates for this position.
  • Must have the ability to travel to the various Pentagon Technologies Facilities within the continental US as required.
  • Must be able to travel to Vendor and Customer facilities within the continental US as required.

Physical Demands:

  • Must pass company required screening tests.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit and stand, reach with hands and arms and perform light routine office work, which includes computer workstation usage.
